Day 24 - Triops Heaven

I haven't been posting much about my triops...
for good reason.
My mom might have sent them to triops heaven...
She thinks maybe the cold weather we were having might have killed them. I'm sad.
But there is kind of good news...
We only put half the eggs in the water so we are going to try again!
My mom says it is too cold to start today so we are going to try this weekend.
I really hope she gets it right this time.

They were so small and hard to see so I thought maybe I just stopped
being able to see them for some reason.
Like maybe they were hiding or grew some cool super power
to be invisible. My mom said that wasn't the case.

I will keep posting with my mom about our triops.
If you want to follow along during the summer, I would like that a lot!

Our last chance at triops will be posted this weekend!

Day 3: It's ALIVE!

It has been three days since I started "growing" the triops
and today I finally got to see two of them!
They look like a little white speck in the water and they are very hard to see.
If you look very closely, you can see them wiggle
around in the water!

The directions say to feed the triops as soon as you see that they have
started to hatch.... and that's JUST what I did!

I crunched up one food pellet and put it in the water.

(the binoculars did not help at all)

That's all for now, Folks!

Day One

Friday after school I finally got to put my
triops eggs in their new home.
The directions say that they will take 2-4 days to hatch.

First we rinsed out the container with distilled water,
then we filled it with sand!
This was fun!

Then my mommy helped me add the distilled water.
The container is very wobbly!

The water got very cloudy... It got better as the sand settled down to the bottom.

Next I got to add half the triops eggs!
The eggs are packed in moss, so the eggs sink to the bottom
while the moss floats at the top.

I then placed the triops in the window so that they can
enjoy the sunshine like the rest of us!

I hope you all had a great weekend!

Introducing Charlie and the Triops

Hello, I am Charlie!
I got a cool gift for Christmas
and wanted to share it with my Kindergarten class at MCA
My teacher and classmates got very excited to hatch and grow
these prehistoric triops in our classroom.
After reading the directions we realized that it wouldn't work
to grow them there because
there are no windows for natural light.

I decided to hatch and grow them at home
and share it with my class on the internet.
I have my own website!

This is a Triops.
They have been around for more than 200 million years.
(that's what it says on the box)
Most of the living triops are about an inch long, but some
could get as big as 3 inches!
You can read more about them HERE

I can't wait to start growing them this weekend!
